Recently, visitor numbers at THU have passed 10,000 over the space of a single semester. For us here at THU, it has been extremely gratifying to see this level of public recognition, interest and support.
However, in the wake of the university’s exploding popularity has come increased traffic congestion to the determinant of campus air quality and, by extension, the health of the Tunghai University Farm. Traffic jams around campus parking, overflowing garbage receptacles, damaged trees and shrubs, and the escalating use of university resources are together threating to cause long-lasting damage to the beauty and viability of the THU campus.
To ensure that the quality of the environment of THU remains unchanged, the number of tour groups allowed in November and December 2011 was reduced. In January 2012, a cap of large group visits was instituted, with focus instead turned to senior and vocational high school visits. Today, general visitors, government agency tours, kindergarten visits and middle and elementary school groups are asked to park off campus and enter the university on foot so that everyone can share equally in the beauty of THU’s campus.
