The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has announced Dr. Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee from Taiwan to serve as the president of Sonoma State University. Dr. Lee said that Tunghai University laid a strong foundation for his career development. At a time when the acceptance rate was only 10%, Tunghai has been one of the most important enlightening places in his life.

California State University (CSU) announces Dr. Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee to assume the position of President at Sonoma State University. He is from Taiwan and graduated from Tunghai University.
On May 24th, California State University announced that Dr. Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee will be the president of Sonoma State University. Lee had previously held teaching positions and various high-level roles at Sacramento State University. With nearly 28 years of exceptional experience in university administration, Dr. Lee was recommended by Dr. Jolene Koester, the acting chancellor of the University of California State University system, to serve the position. Dr. Lee has decided to return to the university after four years of retirement, taking the challenges such as the significant drop in freshman enrollment due to COVID-19 and wildfires, as well as a $17.6 million budget deficit, to contribute his services in education.
During an interview in the United States, Dr. Ming-Tung Lee mentioned Tunghai University with pride. He further stated that as he was the first member of his family to obtain a university degree and understood the importance of education for students and their families. He had a strong passion for reading from a young age, and despite the poverty his family sacrificed to buy books for him. Dr. Lee recalled that when he applied to Tunghai University, the acceptance rate was 10%, and Tunghai University was his first enlightening experience in education.

Dr. Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee obtained a degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from Tunghai University in 1983. His wife, Wan-fei Yang, also graduated from Tunghai University, majoring in Political Science.

Dr. Lee recalled his first day at Tunghai University, visiting the library: “To this day, as I sit here talking to you,” he said, “I still remember the smell of all those books. Never in my life had I seen so many books in one place, that I could touch, and pull off the shelf. It was a wonderful feeling.”
Tunghai University President Kuo-En Chang stated that a Taiwanese individual serving as a university president in the United States is an extremely rare achievement. President Chang congratulated Dr. Lee’s both academic and administrative accomplishments and praised him as the pride for Tunghai University as well as for Taiwan.
