Mr. King Liu, founder of Giant Group, was awarded the United Nations “Special Lifetime Achievement Award” on the International Bicycle Day 2022. Liu is the first Taiwan citizen receiving the honor from the United Nations. Chair of the Cycling Life Style Foundation and Youbike Co., Ms. Vicky Liu, was awarded the “Bicycle Leadership and Excellent Contribution Award” on the same day. The awarding ceremony took place at the Tunghai Luce Chapel. Tunghai University President Guo-En Chang presented the awards on behalf of the UN and Dr. Leszek Sibilski, founder of the UN International Bicycle Day gave his congratulations online.

According to Tunghai University President Guo-En Chang, the United Nations World Bicycle Day awards recognize those who promote cycling for all and those with excellent leadership and unswervingly support of World Bicycle Day. Ms. Vicky Liu is an outstanding alumnus of the Tunghai Department of Accounting and currently a member of the board of directors of Tunghai University. Ms. Liu and her father, Mr. King Liu, have both been strongly supporting the founding spirit and philosophy of Tunghai University. President Chang said he was deeply honored to present the awards on behalf of the United Nations.

Ms. Bonnie Du, Chair of the Giant Group, delivered the acceptance speech for Mr. King Liu. In the past 50 years, she and founder Liu have led the company to become a group with a market value of over 100 billion. Thanks to the foresight of founder Liu, Taiwan has been playing a crucial role in the world's bicycle industry no matter how the global market changes.

Mr. King Liu founded Giant Manufacturing Co. in 1972 and resigned in 2016. Under his leadership, the company produced 113.46 million bicycles. In 1981, he created Giant's own brand products. The bicycles manufactured by the company are sold around the world. products such as carbon fiber ultra-lightweight bicycles and many models have won numerous awards. He has sponsored world-class professional cycling teams, driven a cycling passion in Taiwan, China and Northeast Asia, and supported local cycling activities and created a public bicycle (YouBike) system in Taiwan.

Ms. Vicky Liu, Chair of the Cycling Life Style Foundation and Youbike Co., said that the idea of the UN International Bicycle Day was actually started in Taipei. Dr. Leszek Sibilski joined the Taiwan Bicycle Forum in 2016, was touched by the enthusiasm of the industry, and therefore promoted for the establishment of the International bicycle Day. The promotion of world bicycling has not been diminished by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
