Chan I-I Endorses the 2024 Taichung Youth Model United Nations Taichung City Government Partners with Tunghai University to Broaden High School Students' Global Perspectives

To cultivate international perspectives and leadership skills among young students, the Taichung City Government will host the 4th "Taichung Youth Model United Nations and International Affairs Training Camp" on October 26-27 at Tunghai University. Registration is open now through September 23, inviting high school students to participate. This year’s event features seasoned diplomat Ambassador Chu Yu-Feng as an instructor and renowned journalist Ms. Chan I-I as the event’s ambassador and lecturer. Professors specializing in international relations and foreign policy from Tunghai University will also guide students, aiming to foster global perspectives and leadership abilities.

 

To nurture international perspectives and leadership skills among young students, the Taichung City Government and Tunghai University will co-host the 4th "Taichung Youth Model United Nations and International Affairs Training Camp" on October 26-27. The event was officially announced at a press conference today (19th).

 

Taichung City Government Secretary-General Hsieh Chia-Chen stated that the event promises an engaging lineup, including international affairs lectures by Ambassador Chu and Ms. Chan I-I, along with diverse workshops such as social dance classes. This marks the city’s second collaboration with Tunghai University, a prestigious institution ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and one of Central Taiwan’s most internationally recognized schools. Hsieh expressed confidence that the event will provide a rich learning experience for participants.

Tunghai University Vice President Liu Jeng highlighted that Ms. Chan I-I will share her professional experiences and insights, while professors like Dr. Chang Chun-Hao from the Department of Political Science and Dr. Liao Min-Hsun, Director of International Affairs, will mentor students. Participants will engage in issue research, solution evaluation, and policy recommendations, deepening their understanding of global issues. Liu also revealed that international students from over 50 countries at Tunghai University, including those from Ukraine, Tunisia, Malawi, and Indonesia, will serve as international observers, giving high school participants a hands-on experience in cross-cultural communication and cooperation.

This year’s event incorporates the United Nations’ "2030 Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs), with five committees addressing critical topics: the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly First Committee, the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the United Nations Environment Assembly. Topics will cover peace in the Middle East, the impact of autonomous weapon systems on international security, AI’s effect on sustainable economies and human careers, digital sexual and gender-based violence, and equitable energy transitions.

 

Ms. Chan I-I emphasized that global issues are deeply interconnected with daily life, shaping lifestyles, national security, and human development. She encouraged students to develop broad perspectives, communication skills, and motivation to engage with global affairs, fostering understanding and empathy across cultures, generations, and disciplines. Jan shared that this year’s carefully designed courses and activities will provide students with invaluable insights into international affairs. She looks forward to sharing her perspective on "Viewing the World from Taiwan: A Global Citizen’s Vision," inviting students to join this enriching experience and grow into important contributors to the global community.

The Taichung City Government Secretariat announced that the event is free of charge and includes training for students with no prior experience. Participants will receive certificates upon completion, with awards presented to outstanding performers. The event aims to enroll 300 students, with registration in two phases: the first phase, from August 19 (4:00 PM) to September 15 (11:59 PM), invites recommendations from Taichung’s public and private high schools; the second phase, from September 16 (12:00 AM) to September 23 (6:00 PM), opens for individual online registrations.
