Tunghai University Department of Industrial Design students has been performing brilliantly and won various international awards. A total of 5 works were shortlisted for the 2022 German Red Dot Brands and Communication Design Award. Among them, "SCENT-Traveling Taiwan by smell" won the Red Dot Best of the Best Design Award. This work also won the Silver Award in Packaging Design in Italian A' Design Award.
The “SCENT-Traveling Taiwan by smell” was the graduation project of senior students Chia-Rong Chang and Shu-Shan Tsai, supervised by Tunghai Industrial Design teacher Jie-Hsin Lee. Different from most of the existing souvenirs on the market presented by flavor and visual elements, the work transformed Taiwan's natural, cultural, historical buildings into scents, creating immersive and emotional memories through smells. It created a tourist gift with unique features.

“This was a challenging work for us as non-graphic design students. We went through many try-and-errors in both design and implementation to come to the final result,” said award-winning student Chia-Rong Chang. Shu-Shan Tsai said that the supervising teacher provided crucial guidance in the course of concept clarification and early-stage design. In addition, significant time and efforts were spent in the process of scent adjustment, styling, and package design in order to create the effect of travel memories.
Supervisor Jie-Hsin Lee pointed out that the students noticed the stagnation of Taiwan's tourism industry was due to the pandemic and made it a good entry point for creation. The work had a strong design value in response to the background of time. In addition, the concept of associating the impression of Taiwan's tourism with olfactory memory is a very fresh idea in the design of tourist souvenirs.

Tunghai University Department of Industrial Design Chair Chia-Chen Lee said that the department encourages students to participate in international design competitions to expand design vision, stand out on the international stage and to show Tunghai’s industrial design strength.
