The Hualien Forest District Office of Forestry Bureau of Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan organized the final selection and exhibition of the "Power of Flowers and Wood - Taiwan Wood Design Competition". Tunghai University Industrial Design Department teams achieved exciting results. Supervised by Professor Ming-Shi lee, Jing-Cheng Chang and Guan-Ti Lee won a prize of NTD 60,000 for the work "Morisake Revisited" and team Zi-Yun Hsu and Hsin-Chen Lin won an honorable mention award with "Mountain Field".

There were 92 pieces of work from 24 colleges and universities in the competition. Among those professional and practical work with designs full of creativity and ingenuity, the “Morisake Revisited” work won the Gold Award in the creative furniture category. The design took the Morisake forestry culture as background and feature, putting traditional Japanese architecture of layered roof and rain shade stacking into the closet design. The work integrated the gradually forgotten architectural patterns and past lifestyles to bring back the aesthetics of life and the warmth in the space.

Guan-Ti Lee, a third-year student in the Industrial Design Dept., said that the work took 6 months to complete. The most difficult part was in deciding on the shape design and the actual crafting from design was also more difficult than imagined. His partner Jing-Cheng Chang said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a long period of online discussions on design concept. It was a special creation experience which he gained a lot.
Industrial Design Dept. Professor Ming-Shi Chen praised the students’ devotion in the process of ideation, material choosing, modification, modeling and shaping the work.
The Department of Industrial Design of Tunghai University features small-class theme courses, international exchange learning, and industry-academia cross-domain learning. It encourages students to show their design creativity through their works, and actively promotes students to participate in design competitions. In 2021, the Department had excellent performance in individual and group design competitions, including the first Mahoney Furniture and Home Decoration Design Gold Award, FaFaCASA Aluminum Furniture Design Competition, and the champion award in the first Jintongli Cup Product Design Competition.
