The “Away from War, Study in Taiwan” project was initiated by Prof. James Sims. Sims has been in Taiwan for 35 years and believes that Tunghai University can offer a helping hand as firmly as the government of Taiwan does. Once the idea of ‘Taiwan can help, Tunghai can help too’ was raised, the university President granted his full support. According to Prof. Sims, humanitarian supports to the Ukrainian people should be a common deed of all. Taiwan has the best education resources and Tunghai will be able to offer sufficient scholarship and living supports for Ukrainian students to study for a university program in Taiwan.
Tunghai Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Feng-Di Lung, said that the Ukraine Scholarship Program will support 10 Ukrainian students for full scholarship and fixed amount of living stipends, on-campus dormitory, campus work-study opportunities and free Chinese classes. Public Relations Director Chao-Shi Huang said that Tunghai is a highly internationalized university. With over 1000 international students, Tunghai offers an annual scholarship of over NTD 20 million for them. For the Ukraine initiative, an NTD 16 million budget will be allocated in the coming 4 years.
The project has already received supports from Tunghai alumni branches at US New York, US North California and Southern California. The student recruitment activities will start in May through the efforts of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
