Tunghai University Department of Architecture Master’s degree student Shu-Yi Chao and Department of Sociology Doctoral degree student Wei-Li Lu won Excellence Awards of the 2021 Taiwan Study Graduate Research Scholarship. The two students are the only award-winning students among nearly 100 applicants from all private universities.

The scholarship is granted by National Taiwan Library to encourage graduate students to undertake research in Taiwan study. In the past, all award-winners were from public universities. Tunghai University is so far the only private university to win the award. Being granted with two Excellence Awards means a high recognition of Tunghai’s teaching and research momentum.

Advised by Professor Chijeng Kuo, Architecture Department Master’s degree student Shu-Yi Chao made a research on “The Management and Conservation of Stone Weirs at Taiwan’s North-western Coast – from Household Economy to Labor Equity.” Mr. Chao joined THU’s Master of Architecture in Urban Design and Environmental Studies (MAUDES) program with his expertise in water and soil conservation. He thanked the teachers at the Dept. of Architecture who nurtured his personal research methodology and Prof. Chijeng Kuo for providing him with the opportunity to join the stone weir project and for allowing him to complete independent research while keeping timely guidance.
